美國精神科住院醫師面試問題 (Psychiatry Residency Interview Questions)

閒聊：(Warm-up & Basic Data)

• How's your day?
• Where are you? What time is it? How's the weather there? (線上面試)
• Tell me about your family.
• What do your parents do for a living?
• Whom are you living with?
• Do you have any siblings?
• Have you ever visited (the city that program located)? Do you have any family in the US? Have your family ever come to the US?

有些面試官不太好聊，氣氛會微微尷尬。大致上只要記得微笑有禮貌應該不會有問題。

經典基本款：(Classical Interview Questions)

• Tell me about yourself.
• Why do you apply to our program?
• What is your expectation for the residency?
• Your strength? Your weakness?
• How would you/your friend describe yourself/you?
• Do you have any role models?
• Tell me about your research experience. How does that inspire you to persuade a career in psychiatry?
• Why are you so interested in research work?
• What are you looking for in a residency program? How would you describe your ideal (the answer you said)?
• Tell me something you are most proud of.
• Tell me about (one of the US clinical experiences).
• Tell me about your volunteer experience. 
• I saw you (a hobby on CV). What is that about?
• What do you see yourself in the next 5 years? How about 10 years?
• How would you manage your time in residency? Like 50% in research and 50% in clinical work or…?
• What do you do for fun?
• How do you deal with stress?
• What is the biggest challenge for psychiatry in the US?
• What would be the biggest challenge for you to do the residency?
• Do you have any connection in (the state)? Any family members...or...?
• Do you have any questions for me?
• What is the advantage to work as a psychiatrist? 
• What is the disadvantage to work as a psychiatrist? How would you deal with it?
• How do you feel about seeing a patient remotely? 
• What are the pros and cons of telemedicine?
• What is the role the psychiatrists play in taking care of a patient with a severe medical condition, for example, a patient in ICU?
• How do you think about the idea of "residents receive individual psychotherapy"?
• What have you been doing since graduation?
• Tell me something that is not on your ERAS application.
• I have seen many competitive applicants during this interview season. Why should I choose you?
• How do your parents feel about your decision to start a career in the US?
• How do your parents feel about you going into psychiatry?

經典款問題準備好就好了。誠實回答相當重要，但是也要注意對方的program重視學術/臨床工作的程度。

文化差異/時事：(Culture and Current Events)

• How does the COVID pandemic affect your home country? 
• What would you think is the work we can do to support the health care providers during the pandemic?
• Tell me about your home country. How does the culture affect your practice?
• What is the difference between the healthcare system in the US and your home country? How do you see so many patients in such a short time?
• Are you practicing in Taiwan? Do you need to do an additional internship or something that allows you to practice?
• Tell me about your medical training.
• Tell me about the similarity and differences between the psychiatry ward in the US and Taiwan.
• How do you manage the stereotype of psychiatry in an Asia country?
• What kind of patients do you see in Taiwan?

蠻多人不清楚台灣跟中國是不同國家，要有澄清國籍的心理準備。對方也不見得了解台灣高中畢業直接進入醫學系的教育系統，需要簡短解釋。（美國的醫學院為學士後制，必須先有大學學位才能申請。）

情境/行為學：(Behavioral/Conditional Questions)

• Tell me an experience that you violate a rule.
• Do you have any experience that you have difficulty with patients with a different cultural background? How did you manage it?
• What kind of patient do you hate to work with? What is the difficulty of working with them? How would you manage such kinds of patients?
• Tell me an experience that you were having conflicts with your peers.
• Tell me a time you experience transference or countertransference with a patient.
• What would you do if you received negative feedback?
• Tell me what would you do if you disagree with a senior resident or attending physician?
• What would you do if you found the practice in the US is different from what you were taught in Taiwan?
• What would you do if you found your colleague seemed to be down and inattentive to his/her job?
• Tell me about something you could have done better. If you could do it again, what would you do to make a difference?

這類的問題結束經常沒有feedback，問完就緊接著別的問題了。

事件追問型：(Details of A Single Event)

• Tell me about the (...course) you took. What did you learn from it? How did it affect your practice?
• I noticed you (an experience). Why you did this (an experience)? What was that about? How does that affect your life?
• Tell me about your (childhood experience). How do you feel about your (childhood experience)? How does your (childhood experience) affect your life? 

經常三個問題連在一起問。1.) Tell me about… 2.) How do you feel about… 3.) How does that affect your life/practice? 中間穿插問一些他們想知道的細節。

不少有心理/諮商背景或是精神分析專長的面試官愛問childhood experience，而且真的是問好問滿問得不要不要。不想被問就別寫在自傳裡。

傳說中曾出現的神奇問題：(Rare and Unprecedented Questions)

• Tell me about your childhood.
• What is your darkest secret?
• If you could be any kind of food/container/animal/anything, what would you be and why?
• Tell me a joke.
• Who are you and why are you in my office?
• Tell me about the last book you read.
• What's your favorite TV show/movie/book?
• If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 1 book, 1 CD, and 1 movie. GO!
• Have you ever been in love?
• What's your favorite animal? Why? Ok now, this is a leap but how does it relate to psychiatry?
• Why are you smiling?
• Given psychiatry's controversial past management we no longer use (eg, lobotomies), what practice of today will we see in a similar light in 2050?
• Tell me about a time when you failed.
• Describe your mother in one word.
• Tell me how you'd describe psychiatry to someone in layman's terms.
• Tell me about a time in med school where you were anxious/nervous.
• If you were on a mental illness island with only 3 meds, what would they be?
• How would you fare in the zombie apocalypse?

筆者有被問到「如果你是一種容器，你會是什麼容器？為什麼？」。我想不出任何超越馬克杯、聖杯、火盃跟分靈體的愚蠢答案…（杯具堆滿茶几QQ）
